I originally set up this blog to help foreigners have an enjoyable experience when visiting the western cape wineries in South Africa.

I realised that it is very difficult for a tourist to choose where to go and which wineries to visit, when you have 600+ wine producers to choose from.

When I first moved to SA December 2010, my palate struggled to adjust to SA wine, but after living here for a while and after visiting over 100+ wine estates, I have found many wines which I really like and can highly recommend.

Admittingly, when you come from another country it is hard not to compare the wine in SA to what you are used to back home. However, once you realise they are not the same (they have their own characteristics due to the different soil, climate etc) and appreciate their wines for being SA wines, it will improve your opinion and experience of the wines immediately.

If you are staying in SA for a while, don't dispair, your palate will change, and you will soon find yourself liking SA wine over your home countries wine!!

I hope my blog will help wine lovers have an enjoyable wine experience while in SA.

Souh Hill

Today we were driving back to Cape Town from Sandbaai. We decided to visit a few wineries on our way back. As it was Sunday, there were only two wineries along the Valley Rd/Highlands Rd that were open for wine tastings. So we turned left on to Valley Road and made our way to South Hill first.


The winery is very lovely!! The building is nice, the view is nice, and the interior decorating has a neat feeling to it. It is very welcoming and has style. We walked in to the restaurant, I definitely want to come here for a meal sometime!! The tasting is done at the bar in the restaurant. A tasting is free at this winery.


The waiter served us all three wines to try, and didn't tell us anything about the wine, but we were left with the bottles, so at least we could read the labels if nothing else. I wasn't too bothered about the fact we weren't told anything about the wines, as it kind of added to the charm of this place.


We tried the Sauvignon blanc 2010 (R60), this was very nice, it was fruity, smooth, balanced and delicious!! The Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2011 (R40) was also soft and tasty. The Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (R70) was soft, balanced, and had a slight powdery aftertaste.


We had a look at the menu and they do a 2 course for R165 and a 3 course for R195. There is a selection of 3 entreés, 4 mains and 2 desserts. The food on the menu sounded very nice and I felt the selection was ideal.

We looked around the winery, admiring the views and checking out wedding venue possibilities. It all was lovely, and I do think a wedding here would be nice. The photos they had on display for weddings at their winery, were really beautiful!! Be sure to take a look at the photo album.


This is a lovey winery to visit when out this way. If you are planning a meal while on your wine tour, put this one on your list.

    The other day I went to a South Hill wine tasting at Marika's Restaurant. The wine was paired with food made by Marika. The food was amazing, so I highly recommend visiting the restaurant!!

    That evening we tried the South Hill MCC which was very nice!! It was soft, creamy, not dry, not sweet, had pear, granny smith apple and apricot taste, it was delicious!! I highly recommend tasting or buying this MCC!!!
